Tezza's journal 9 Months, 1 Week ago
Hi, my name's Terry and I'm a sugarholic... carbs are a serious problem for me. I think I need to go low-carb to lose weight.

OK, so I want to lose weight and get fitter... not just for health's sake, so I can live better. I'm starting a journal here because telling people about one's efforts helps to maintain motivation.

Current weight is around 125kg. I say 'around' because I've tried three different sets of scales and gotten six different answers! Waist is about 130cm. I'd like to get my waist down to 80cm for vanity's sake, and put some meat on my back and shoulders. Lower body strength is good. Us fat guys all have strong legs, especially since I have been in the habit of long daily walks for something like 25 years. But I've got a weak chest, noodle arms and weak grip strength.

Since I am so weak, I'll start with Rafi's body weight exercises posted here on the site. I'll also do the Eades' "six week cure for the middle aged middle" because my doctor reckons I've got a fatty liver and I think I've got fat around internal organs. So the 6 week cure will get things kick-started, and then I'll go low-carb "Primal" after that.

Do you want me to attach photos of my Incredible Shrinking Gut? I'm not sure if I should, since I don't want to be sued for causing hysterical blindness in people who see them!

I for one would like to see before and after pictures. You can always just show a picture with your shirt on as well so people just get the idea.

Either way I'm looking forward to watching your weight loss journey here Tezza! Good luck man. We're all rooting for you.

Yes, I'll be blogging about it in this thread, and probably on my other blog as well. For the convenience of Pasionate Fitness users, I'll post the same data here so you don't have to go to a different blog.

Pre-diet: Getting Prepared
First step is to get everything ready so I don't stumble when it comes to putting things into practice. The first two weeks involve mostly protein shakes spiked with leucine. I've ordered these from Biotest Australia, because I believe in "garbage in, garbage out" and Biotest's products seem to be top-notch, from what I've read. My initial order will cover the first two weeks. Next step is to work out a menu for the one solid meal per day of the first two weeks of the plan, do a shopping list, and buy the ingredients.

One particular issue I expect to face is that I'm not really in the habit of cooking. That's something I'll have to change if I'm going to beat the gut. But if I've got everything I should eat in the house, and nothing that I shouldn't, it should make it easier to stick to.

Started the first day of the diet today; had a shake for breakfast consisting of three scoops chocolate whey powder, one scoop (5 grams) leucine, 1 raw egg, 2 tablespoons coconut cream, ice, water. 3 hours later, experienced what can politely be described as "severe gastric distress". I'm not sure if it was a bad reaction to the protein powder, or if it's a hangover from a recent flu-like illness I've had that screwed up my digestion, or if I just need probiotics. I'll keep an eye on it and see what happens. Second protein shake of day went down OK so far, but a certain amount of gurgling noises coming from my midsection... it sounds as if I have swallowed a very small tyrannosaurus.

The shakes are kind of thick, I think I'll ditch the ice and switch to just water and more of it so it's thinner and easier to drink.

I'm also experiencing a bit of hunger on this plan. But I suppose that's to be expected when one is on a caloric deficit.
