** This thread discusses the content article: The Secret Revealed! How Taylor Lautner Got Ripped for Twilight with his Trainer, Jordan Yuam **

Twilight: New Moon has taken the U.S. by storm. More specifically, Taylor Lautner, the "werewolf" in the movie, has taken teenage U.S. girls by storm. It's no secret that Taylor Lautner got ripped for the movie, putting on a massive 30 pounds of muscle in eight months at only 17. Exactly how he did manage to get ripped for Twilight is a secret though. At least it was a secret...until now.

How Taylor Lautner Got Ripped and Put on Mass For Twilight...Intesity and "Load Under Tension"

Taylor Lautner's personal trainer was someone named Jordan Yuam. Jordan Yuam is known for specializing in putting on muscle mass, and uses untraditional and work intensive methods. His main principle is to focus 100% on the primary muscles and to completely disregard stabilizers and secondary muscles. The technique to achieve this affect is called load under tension (LUT).

What is load under tension? Previously, the big fad in muscle building was something called time under tension (TUT). The theory behind TUT was that the more time you contracted your muscles under a load, the better growth you would get. With that logic, we can surmise that LUT is lifting a heavy load. In other words, it's personal trainer geek speak for saying that he lifted heavy weight.

Originally, Taylor Lautner Worked Out With No Rest Periods

Under the supervision of Jordan Yuam, Taylor Lautner pushed his body to its muscle building limits by purposely overtraining. He lifted heavy and worked out hard for 5 days a week, and at times, even 7 days a week. In the beginning, this method of overtraining worked well for Taylor and he put on a lot of muscle quickly. This method of training is called purposely overtraining and works for the short term, but not for bigger goals.

After awhile though, he stopped making progress and even started to lose weight.  At that point, his trainer, Jordan Yuam, told him he was overtraining and he had to start adding more rest periods. Taylor did this, and once again he started seeing major progress in working out.

[This isn't a real trailer, but it's pretty cool someone was able to do such a good job without using real clips from the movie.]

Taylor Lautner Was Eating Constantly

Taylor Lautner also went on the 6 meals a day path to putting on mass quickly. Not only that, his specific method of weight gaining forced him to eat every two hours. If he was sleeping, he woke up to eat. If he was on the set, he took a break to eat. The idea behind this was to keep his body from burning fat at all times, and allow him to put on a tremendous amount of weight in record time.

A Few Misconceptions About Taylor Lautner's Mass Gaining Feat

There are a few misconceptions about Taylor Lautner's mass gaining feat. For one, he wasn't in bad shape to start with. He has a background in martial arts since being a little kid, and had even auditioned on t.v. as a kid to show off his talent. He clearly had some experience and background with weights and fitness before he started.

Another big misconception is that he put on 30 pounds in just a couple of months. It actually took him around 8 months, which is closer to a year. Gaining 30 pounds of muscle is still amazing in that period of time, but it's not the same as saying that he gained 10 pounds of muscle per month.

Hmm. Purposefully over training is a new one to me. I thought your muscles grew while you rested, not while you trained, and thus over training would always result in simple fatigue and little growth. Interesting.

overtraining seems like a bad idea, it producess
stress hormones that have a similar detrimental effect on your health as to be being under a lot of stress. Personally I am aiming to have a similar build to Christian bale in Ameican Psycho which was lean and looked athletic although through different means I don't have time to workout for 3 hours a day ( as bale was).

I agree that over-training is a bad idea, and outside of the army I've pretty much stayed away from it.

There does seem to be some evidence though that short term over training, like for a week, can temporarily speed up results before it starts causing harm.

How are the ab exercises going, btw?

Did you know...You can contract two or more muscles at the same time harder than just one muscle at a time. Pretty crazy, huh?
