All over, we hear over and over how important it is to "change up your workout routine often" so that you can avoid getting bored and keep motivated. The truth is that this is possibly some of the WORST advice that can be given to someone starting to work out - or someone who has been working out for awhile. Here's why. There are two main factors that come into play when trying to get in amazing shape. They are: 1. Building habits. 2. Improving at what you're doing. NEITHER of the above can be accomplished if you constantly change up your workout routine. You can't build habits when you keep doing something else, and you can't improve at something if you don't keep doing it! That's why it's so important to NOT change your workouts often. Do bodybuilders ever stop bench pressing? Do swimmers ever stop swimming? Do soccer players ever stop playing soccer? No. And yet they all keep improving. Yes, they might tweak small things here and there - but the overall activities stay the same. On top of it, building habits is what will make it EASIER for you to keep working out. You don't always need to be motivated - it just needs to be part of your rhythm. Just to give an example - because of my injury (which is healing thank God), I go to physical therapy. Because I've been going to physical therapy for awhile, at this point ALL I have to do is get myself up to go. Once I'm there, my body takes over and I don't even need to think about the exercises I'm doing... This is how it should be. Whether you go to a gym or workout out at home. You should be doing the same exercises often to the point where all you need to do is get yourself up to workout, and then your habits and muscle memory should take over. Not only will you improve and get in better shape than if you had done otherwise - but it's also easier! So what do you think - is it better to keep doing the same exercises or should you be constantly changing up your routine? NOTE: Just as a note, even if you only do bodyweight exercises - it's a good idea to find a park or somewhere to go to workout. It helps get you in the workout mentality. SECOND NOTE: I'm trying not to plug my book too hard here, but I do want to mention that there's a special 24 hour deal going on with the IDF Fat Loss Training Manual. The link to it can be found HERE. I appreciate every person who buys it and it also helps me keep running this site. Thanks!

Did you know...No matter how hard you workout, your diet is what will define your results. Guess it's time to hit the carrots, eh? |
